Infections
Infections of the spine are not common and can be difficult to diagnose. Infections may occur spontaneously or from prior surgery. However, early treatment is essential as serious consequences can result from delays.
Spinal infections are widely divided into three categories:
- Vertebral osteomyelitis (infection of the spinal column)
- Disc space infection
- Spinal abscess
Early treatment generally includes making a proper diagnosis. Sometimes surgical intervention is required to remove devitalized tissue or to reinforce the spinal column when vertebrae are weakened and the structural integrity of the spinal column is compromised. Additional treatment with antibiotics is often required. In addition, surgical intervention is required in the case of spinal abscess.
