Trauma can result in fractures of the spine. Most fractures do not result in neurological defects and can be treated successfuly with bracing.

Some fractures will require surgery due to instability which results in loss of alignment and support of the spinal column, loss of stability of the spine and compression of the cord with associated neurologic problems.
