Used as an alternative to spinal fusion surgery, Artificial Disc Replacement eliminates severe low back pain by replacing a degenerated spinal disc with an artificial one.
The artificial disc is a high-tech device made of two metallic endplates and a moveable high-density plastic center that, once implanted, is designed to help provide full and pain-free motion and enable the flexibility to bend and twist.
Cervical disc replacement will soon be available to the public and the surgeons at NJSC will be among the first in the country to make this new technology available.
The artificial disc replacement procedure is not for everyone, and should only be undertaken by a highly trained spine surgeon. Our physicians can determine whether or not a patient's condition meets the specific criteria for this form of surgery. Surgical candidates generally have disc disease at only one level, have predominantly lower back pain, and have no evidence of spinal instability.
