New Jersey Spine Center is happy to welcome John Z. Shumko, MD, PhD as the newest member of our practice.
Dr. Shumko has diverse medical expertise in the areas of musculoskeletal and spine disorders. He diagnoses and treats patients with spine and muscle/joint pain, sports injuries, ambulatory/balance issues, and arthritic conditions. He performs Electrodiagnostic testing (EMG) to identify central and peripheral nerve lesions.
He is known for his compassion towards his patients and exhausts his expertise to use a non-operative approach in treating his patients for the best possible outcomes.
For the past 20 years he served as the Chairman of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Medical Director of the Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Institute, Matthew J. Morahan III Assessment Center for Athletes. He also held these positions at the Comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation Center at Saint Barnabas Medical Center and the Ambulatory Care Center. Prior to his experience at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, he was the Medical Director at Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Rehabilitation Center in NY.
Dr. Shumko earned his medical degree as well as a PhD in Anatomy and Cell Biology from the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. He completed his residency at UMDNJ-University Hospital and the prestigious Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation. During his residency he served as Academic Chief Resident. He was additionally honored in residency by being elected to Alpha Omega Alpha – the national medical honor society.
He is Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and is a Fellow of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Additionally, Dr. Shumko is a Diplomat of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
